The Bibliotherapy Book Club is an established program, launched in October 2004. Each session is held at the Pig House, 1931 Northport Road, Picton, Ontario; meeting once a month for 90 minutes offers time for reading and reflection.

Bibliotherapy can be defined as the use of books to help people solve problems. Another, more precise definition is that Bibliotherapy is a technique for structuring interaction between a therapist and a participant based on mutual sharing of literature.

The first three books suggested:

  • "FATHER JOE" BY TONY HENDRA
  • "THE LOVELY BONES" BY ALICE SEBOLD
  • "FALL ON YOUR KNEES" BY ANN-MARIE MACDONALD

Bibliotherapy Book Club Concept

The idea of healing through books is not a new one, it can be traced far back in history, from the days of the first libraries in Greece. The use of books in healing enhances group process, helping people unlock emotions and relieve emotional pressures. Additionally, by examination and analysis of moral values and the stimulation of critical thinking, the reader develops self-awareness, an enhanced self-concept and improved personal and social judgment. This outcome results in improved consciousness, an ability to handle and understand important life issues, and increased empathy, tolerance, respect and acceptance of others - all through identification with an appropriate literary model.
